Sports hall

The extension of the 2nd Elementary School in Plzeň represents a modern interpretation of school architecture, deliberately contrasting with the historic character of the original building. The new structure, which includes a gymnasium, changing rooms, classrooms, and ancillary spaces, aligns its volume with the adjacent mass of the original gym, creating a contemporary “twin” of the existing facility.

A key feature of the design is the connecting link with a naturally illuminated vestibule, which unites the two buildings and serves as a central gathering space. The split-level concept enables efficient use of space and seamless connections between floors, facilitating orientation and movement within the building. The material palette combines modern glass, concrete, and white aluminum panels, creating a contrasting dialogue with the historic school façade. The varying size of the panels on the façade adds visual dynamism, while the darker plinth provides a grounded, visually anchored presence within the site.

The layout was designed with a strong focus on functionality: changing rooms and the gym are located in the basement, while classrooms and offices occupy the upper floors. The building is fully barrier-free, ensuring accessibility for all users.Overall, the extension presents itself as a confident and modern response to the historic environment, not only expanding the school’s capacity but also contributing significantly to its architectural enrichment.
