The revitalization of the courtyard at Úvoz Primary and Nursery School seeks to strike a balance between traffic, children’s safety, and the quality of the public space. The proposal reorganizes parking, clarifies pedestrian connections, and enhances the areas in front of the schools and the ice rink. The aim is to transform a currently chaotic and poorly organized courtyard into a safe, legible, and welcoming environment for the school community’s everyday life.

The study addresses the current condition of the courtyard, which is heavily affected by unorganized parking and private car traffic. Particularly in the morning hours, conflicts arise between arriving vehicles and the movement of children on foot.

The proposal therefore introduces a clearer hierarchy of vehicular and pedestrian routes, defines designated parking spaces, and provides short-term drop-off parking in a Kiss & Ride arrangement. Staff parking is concentrated in the rear part of the site, freeing up space in the immediate vicinity of the school.

An important part of the proposal is also the improvement of pedestrian connections and step-free accessibility, particularly to the nursery school. Upgraded surfaces, additional street furniture, and carefully considered greenery create a clearer and more comfortable environment.

The forecourts of the school and the ice rink also gain a new quality. Previously indistinct and predominantly functional areas are transformed into clearly defined spaces for arrival, meeting, and staying. At the same time, the proposal respects the existing vegetation, technical infrastructure, and operational requirements of the site.

The result is a space that does not place traffic at the centre of activity, but instead creates more room for pedestrians, greenery, and the everyday life of the school.
